Indexed Reflection

coverimage_edited.jpg

This installation serves an indexical notation of the reflections and patterns on stainless steel elevator doors. As common as the elevator usage is daily, riders rarely look at the actual doors while waiting for the elevator, despite being directly in-front of them.

The material of the doors and frame are brushed vertically, allowing only horizontal reflections to be visible. Only looking at the doors perpendicularly will give the correct reading. I observed the reflections on the doors during different times of the day and on different floors and discovered the image is the same regardless. The reflections of the mortar and grout are indexed with a thin band running the width of the doors. Even after installation, the indexed lined went unnoticed by many who used the elevator daily.
